When Anxiety Makes You Question Yourself

Stephanie Strouth • January 9, 2026
Anxiety has a way of making you doubt yourself in subtle but powerful ways. You may find yourself second-guessing decisions you once felt confident about, replaying conversations long after they end, or worrying that you said or did something wrong even when there is no clear evidence. Over time, this constant self-questioning can chip away at confidence and leave you feeling uncertain about your own judgment.

This self-doubt is not a personal flaw. Anxiety keeps the brain in a state of heightened alert, constantly scanning for potential mistakes or threats. When this state becomes chronic, it can distort perception and make neutral situations feel risky or unsafe. The mind begins to treat uncertainty as danger, even when no harm is present.

Therapy helps interrupt this cycle by strengthening trust in yourself and your internal signals. At Anchoring Hope Counseling, clients learn to recognize anxiety-driven thought patterns, separate fear from reality, and rebuild confidence in their ability to make decisions. As anxiety becomes more manageable, self-trust often returns naturally, allowing people to move through life with greater ease and clarity.

You are not broken because anxiety makes you question yourself. With the right support, it is possible to quiet the noise and reconnect with your sense of confidence and stability.

Anchoring Hope Counseling accepts most insurances except Medicaid and Medicare and offers therapy as well as mental health medication management. Clients have 24/7 access to our wellness app, telehealth services for residents throughout Virginia, and in-person appointments at our Abingdon, Wise, and Pennington Gap locations. Even when people know boundaries are healthy, actually setting them can feel uncomfortable or frightening. You may worry about disappointing others, being misunderstood, or causing conflict.

Not everyone experiences emotional distress as crying or intense sadness. For many people, emotional pain shows up as numbness.

Many people feel overwhelmed even when there is not one specific event they can point to as the cause. You may have a stable job, a home, and people in your life, yet still feel as if everything is just too much.

Many people feel uneasy when they try to rest. Sitting still may bring racing thoughts, guilt, or a sense that something important is being neglected.

  • We Accept Most Insurances (Not Medicaid/Medicare)

We accept Anthem, United/Optum, Cigna, and Aetna (plans through an employer, family member, or marketplace).  If you check your insurance portal to see if we accept your insurance, we may not show up on that directory. We do use insurance for individual sessions, but not for true couples/family therapy. If you wish to check your benefits prior to scheduling, you may complete a profile HERE. Call us at 276-298-5034 if you have additional questions. We also provide counseling at a private pay rate and can check your out-of-network benefits for policies we are not in network with. Unfortunately, Medicaid/Medicare does not have out-of-network benefits and will only pay for in-network providers. We are NOT in network with Medicaid/Medicare.
