When You Feel Like You’re Always Waiting for Something to Go Wrong

Stephanie Strouth • February 16, 2026
Some people move through life with a constant sense that something bad is about to happen. Even when things are going well, there may be a quiet tension beneath the surface. You might find it difficult to fully relax, celebrate positive moments, or trust that stability will last. This persistent anticipation of problems can feel exhausting and confusing.

Often, this mindset develops after experiences where life felt unpredictable or unstable. When you have been caught off guard in the past, your brain may try to protect you by staying alert at all times. While this response is meant to keep you safe, it can create ongoing anxiety and make it difficult to feel peace in the present.

Therapy can help you understand why your nervous system stays on guard and how to gently shift it toward safety. At Anchoring Hope Counseling, clients explore how past experiences influence current thought patterns and learn strategies to reduce constant hypervigilance. As trust in the present moment grows, many people begin to experience more calm and confidence in their daily lives.

You do not have to live in a constant state of anticipation. With support, it is possible to experience stability without waiting for it to disappear.

At Anchoring Hope Counseling, we accept most insurances and provide therapy along with mental health medication management. Clients receive 24/7 access to our wellness app, telehealth services for residents throughout Virginia, and in-person appointments at our Abingdon, Wise, and Pennington Gap locations. Stress is something everyone experiences, but when it becomes constant, it can begin affecting both emotional and physical well-being.

Emotional exhaustion affects more than your mood.

Stress is a natural part of life, but when it becomes ongoing, it can begin to affect your emotional and physical well-being in significant ways. You may notice increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, or feeling emotionally overwhelmed by situations that once felt manageable. Chronic stress can impact nearly every area of life. Relationships may become more difficult, responsibilities may feel heavier, and motivation may decrease. When stress continues without enough recovery, your mind and body can begin operating in a constant state of tension. Many people become so accustomed to stress that they stop recognizing how much it is affecting them. Constantly pushing through emotional exhaustion can make it difficult to feel present, rested, or emotionally balanced. Therapy can help you better understand how stress is affecting your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. At Anchoring Hope Counseling, individuals work with providers to identify stressors and develop healthier coping strategies that support long-term well-being. Over time, many people find they are better able to manage responsibilities without feeling constantly overwhelmed. Stress does not have to control your daily life. With the right support, it is possible to create healthier patterns and regain a greater sense of balance. • We Accept Most Insurances (Not Medicaid/Medicare)

We accept Anthem, United/Optum, Cigna, and Aetna (plans through an employer, family member, or marketplace).  If you check your insurance portal to see if we accept your insurance, we may not show up on that directory. We do use insurance for individual sessions, but not for true couples/family therapy. If you wish to check your benefits prior to scheduling, you may complete a profile HERE. Call us at 276-298-5034 if you have additional questions. We also provide counseling at a private pay rate and can check your out-of-network benefits for policies we are not in network with. Unfortunately, Medicaid/Medicare does not have out-of-network benefits and will only pay for in-network providers. We are NOT in network with Medicaid/Medicare.
