How Therapy Helps You Build a Healthier Relationship With Yourself

Stephanie Strouth • December 1, 2025

Your relationship with yourself shapes your confidence, emotional health, and daily decisions. Learn how therapy helps you build self-worth and inner peace.

The Most Important Relationship You Have Is With Yourself

Many people treat others with compassion, patience, and understanding — yet struggle to extend the same care to themselves.
Self-criticism, guilt, overthinking, perfectionism, and emotional neglect often stem from an unhealthy relationship with oneself.

But the good news is this:
Self-worth can be repaired.
Self-trust can be rebuilt.
Self-kindness can be learned.

And therapy is one of the most effective places to start.

Signs You May Need to Rebuild Your Self-Relationship

  • You may feel disconnected from yourself if you:
  • Criticize yourself harshly
  • Feel uncomfortable expressing needs
  • Struggle with boundaries
  • Downplay your achievements
  • Feel unworthy of rest or joy
  • Base your worth on productivity
  • Feel like you’ve “lost yourself”

These are symptoms of emotional imbalance — not personal failures.

How Therapy Helps You Reconnect With Yourself

Therapy provides a safe, supportive space to explore:

  • Your core beliefs about your worth
  • Patterns from your past that shaped your self-view
  • How to quiet your inner critic
  • How to build confidence through action
  • What you truly want and need
  • How to treat yourself with more compassion

As you heal, you’ll discover a more grounded, peaceful, and confident version of yourself.

A Healthier Self-Relationship Changes Everything

When you treat yourself with respect, patience, and compassion, your:

  • Relationships improve
  • Stress decreases
  • Boundaries strengthen
  • Confidence rises
  • Emotional resilience grows

Healing begins internally — and therapy supports every step of that journey.

  • We Accept Most Insurances (Not Medicaid/Medicare)

We accept Anthem, United/Optum, Cigna, and Aetna (plans through an employer, family member, or marketplace).  If you check your insurance portal to see if we accept your insurance, we may not show up on that directory. We do use insurance for individual sessions, but not for true couples/family therapy. If you wish to check your benefits prior to scheduling, you may complete a profile HERE. Call us at 276-298-5034 if you have additional questions. We also provide counseling at a private pay rate and can check your out-of-network benefits for policies we are not in network with. Unfortunately, Medicaid/Medicare does not have out-of-network benefits and will only pay for in-network providers. We are NOT in network with Medicaid/Medicare.
